    Oracy

At Lostwithiel Primary School, we believe that every pupil deserves not only to learn important knowledge and skills, but also to find, use and value their voice. Our curriculum is intentionally designed to empower all children to become confident speakers, active listeners and thoughtful communicators - across every subject and in all aspects of school life. In partnership with the Voice 21 Oracy Framework, we commit to a curriculum where oracy is as visible and valued as reading, writing and mathematics.

We aim for our pupils to:

    • Articulate their ideas with clarity and confidence, adapting their talk to purpose and audience, using rich vocabulary and appropriate physical, linguistic and social communication skills.
    • Engage deeply with others through collaborative, exploratory talk, listening respectfully, building on ideas, challenging and refining thinking together, so that talk becomes a vehicle for learning as well as expression.
    • Use oracy to deepen curriculum learning - through purposeful talk in every subject, not just in English. From science investigations to history debates, from mathematics justification to creative arts presentations, children will use talk to construct meaning, reason, reflect and articulate understanding.
    • Recognise that their voice matters, both within school and beyond: to take part in meaningful dialogue, to share their views, to listen to others, to question, to discuss and to contribute as thoughtful citizens of their community and the wider world.
    • Grow as confident users of language beyond the curriculum, developing vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure and discourse patterns through talk, which in turn supports their reading and writing, their conceptual understanding and their readiness for future learning and life.

We believe this intent is vital in a rapidly changing world - where children need more than content knowledge: they need the skill, the confidence and the disposition to communicate, collaborate, reason and engage. Our curriculum therefore is not only about what pupils learn, but how they learn through talk, and how they are enabled to use their voice.

Through this intent we embed oracy into our school’s culture: from classroom talk-norms (discussion guidelines), to structured talk opportunities, to modelling strong communication by adults, to visible progression in oracy skills from the earliest years through to upper key stages. This ensures that all pupils, including those from diverse backgrounds or who may not yet have a strong spoken language foundation, are supported to make progress in oracy, access the full curriculum and leave Lostwithiel Primary equipped with voice for school, work and life.
